日本の南部にある鹿児島県、出水（※いずみ）市。ここには毎年１０月から１２月にかけて、大陸から１万羽を超えるツルが冬を越すためにやって来る。その中には❶絶滅危惧種の「ナベツル」や「マナヅル」も多く含まれる。出水では、昔からツルが過ごしやすい環境を整えるために餌やねぐらの確保をし、近年では鳥インフルエンザを予防する取り組みも行われている。また観光客にツルのことを教えているのは小学生たちだ。出水市ではツルについての知識が問われる検定を実施。知識を学んだ児童がボランティアでガイドを行う。地元の人々の努力によって支えられる、ツルの越冬地を紹介。

【English】The Cranes of Izumi

Izumi is a city in Kagoshima, in southern Japan. Every year, starting from October, over 10,000 cranes migrate here for the winter. Many are ❶endangered species, like the hooded and white-naped cranes. The people of Izumi have long welcomed the cranes, providing food and a safe environment for them to nest, and have recently also undertaken measures to prevent avian flu. When you visit, you'll be taught about the cranes by volunteer guides, all of whom are local elementary school students. These young guides are certified by Izumi City, which sets an annual test to confirm their knowledge of the birds.
