❶The sweet potato is found worldwide. Among the 4,000 or so varieties, the Japanese satsumaimo is considered especially sweet, due to its high sugar content. Traditionally eaten baked, because of its sweetness satsumaimo is now also being used to make new kinds of desserts. At a major producing area, ❷Kushima in Miyazaki, we discover how the potatoes are cured to protect from the results of damage during harvesting, then stored for two months to bring out their natural sweetness. As the rest of the world comes to know of the special sweetness of Japan's satsumaimo, its popularity continues to spread abroad too.

❶「さつまいも（satsumaimo。紅薯；sweet potapo）」は、漢字で書くと「薩摩芋」なので、九州・鹿児島県の旧名「薩摩（さつま）」に由来する名前であることがすぐわかります。

最南端の鹿児島から日本全国にその栽培が広まった「芋（澱粉質が豊富な根菜類。下記の分類参照）」ということでそう呼ばれるようになったと言います：

❷ビデオで紹介されているのは、鹿児島県の東隣の宮崎県串間市の農家です。鹿児島県及び宮崎県辺りは気候等の関係でさつまいもの栽培に向いているようです：
