Sado Island’s Twin Heritages

Sado Island, off the Niigata coast in the Sea of Japan, has a richly diverse ecosystem thanks to its location where warm and cold currents intersect. It also had vast amounts of gold and silver. In the 17th century, even though all mining was done by hand, this island became a world-leading gold producer, famed for its high quality. In 2024, the Sado Island Gold Mines was inscribed on the World Heritage List. To preserve the habitat of the rare crested ibis, island farmers converted to eco-friendly rice cultivation, and in 2011, these efforts were recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

日本の中部にある新潟県の一部、佐渡島。寒流と暖流が交差するため豊かな自然に恵まれている。かつて佐渡島では金や銀が多く採掘されていた。17世紀ごろから隆盛を極めた金の採掘。手作業であったにも関わらず、当時世界でも最大級・最高品質の金を採掘していたことから、2024年、佐渡島の金山は世界文化遺産に登録された。今、佐渡島では、天然記念物・トキと共生するために、環境にやさしいお米づくりが行われている。この農法は2011年に世界農業遺産に認定されている。

佐渡島是日本中部新潟縣下轄的一座島嶼，處於寒暖流交匯處，因此自然資源十分豐富。佐渡島曾經出產豐富的金銀礦，17世紀左右，這裏曾一度成爲掘金勝地。儘管工人們采用手工作業，佐渡島出產的黃金卻是當時世界上體積最大、品質最好的黃金之一，因此，2024年佐渡島的金礦被列入了世界遺產名錄。而如今，佐渡島爲了保護珍稀鳥類朱鹮，改進了水稻種植技術。2011年，佐渡島的環保種植方法被選入全球重要農業文化遺產名錄。
