2020年の東京オリンピック・パラリンピック競技大会に向け、注目の高まるパラスポーツ。人気競技のひとつが車いすテニスだ。福岡県・飯塚市では、車いすテニスの国際大会が毎年開催され、パラリンピックのホストタウンにも認定された。世界の一流選手が集まるこの大会は、2000名もの市民ボランティアによって支えられ、運営されてきた。この大会設立のきっかけとなったのが、飯塚市の脊髄治療専門の病院だ。当時は珍しかった車いすテニスを、リハビリに取り入れたことから、患者に競技が広まり、町をあげてサポートすることになった。この病院で競技に出会い、今年の大会にも参加するベテラン選手の活躍を通じて、長年車いすテニスを支援してきた飯塚市の取り組みを紹介する。

As the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games approach, para-sports are in the news, one of the most popular ones being wheelchair tennis. Iizuka City in Fukuoka, being the site of an annual international wheelchair tennis championship for a long time, has been chosen as a host town for the Paralympics. The Iizuka championship, staffed by over 2,000 volunteers and attracting top players from all over the world, has its roots at the Iizuka Spinal Injuries Center, where the still relatively unknown sport has been used for rehabilitation. As there had been so many patients continuing to play even after their discharge that local events grew into an international contest and Iizuka became a focus of the sport. We’ll follow one of the Center’s ex-patients as he fights his way through to the finals.
