The Akita Inu, a breed native to Japan, is categorized as a large-size dog with a round face, triangular ears and a curly tail. Although they are big and tough animals, they have gentle and affectionate nature and are known for their absolute loyalty. They were popular in the past as hunting dogs, but the number has decreased drastically in recent years. Therefore, the birthplace of the Akita Inu, Odate City in Akita Prefecture, began a program to breed and promote them, conducting a variety of PR activities such as opening a petting space in the tourist office where visitors can interact with the dogs. Recently, thanks to the appearance of celebrity owners like figure skating champion Alina Zagitova, the Akita Inu has begun to enjoy popularity overseas too.
