剣道とは、竹刀で打突し合う武道。しかし、打突の技術だけでは、試合に勝つことはできない。相手に立ち向かう気持ちや、油断のない心構えといった、心の持ち方も評価されるのが、剣道の最大の特徴だ。剣道の目的は、古来、武士が培ってきた剣術に備わる、気迫や心構えを継承することにある。戦いのためではなく、自身の精神を鍛えるために、現代の剣道家たちは日々の稽古を積み重ね、試合を行なっている。こうした剣道の精神は、深い信頼で結ばれた師弟関係を通して、時を越えて現代へ受け継がれている。

劍道是對陣雙方手持竹刀進行比試的一種競技，但是僅僅擊中對方是無法贏得比賽的。勇於應戰的態度、毫無破綻的心態等精神方面的要素也是比賽的評判標準，這是劍道最大的特點。劍道的目的在於繼承古時候的武士為修習劍術而培養的氣魄和心境，不爲戰勝對手，而是將其用於自身的精神修养。爲了這個目的，當代的劍道家們每日刻苦練習、不斷切磋。劍道精神通過師徒之間彼此信賴的關係，超越千百年的時光得到了繼承和發揚。
