世界各国が脱炭素社会の実現に向けて試行錯誤するなか、日本ではガラスを使った取り組みが注目されている。❶老舗ガラスメーカーは、ガラスの主原料として欠かせない地下資源に代わり、廃棄される卵の殻を使う製法を開発。ガラスの製造過程で排出するCO２の削減を実現した。また、❷化学メーカーと❸建設会社がタッグを組んで開発したのは、窓と太陽電池を組み合わせた“発電する窓ガラス”。ビルが建ち並ぶ都市部での活用が期待されている。

As countries around the world search for more ways to go carbon-free, in Japan methods using glass are being developed. Glass has always been made using resources extracted from the earth. ❶A Japanese glass maker found they could replace limestone with eggshells, reusing a material discarded by the food industry as well as greatly reducing the amount of CO2 emissions in the manufacturing process. Another innovation is window glass with embedded power generating solar cells. A joint effort by ❷chemical and ❸onstruction firms, this provides a new way to generate power from the walls and windows of urban buildings.
