日本の西部に位置し、古くは海運の要所として栄えた山口県・柳井市。この町で有名なのが、金魚の形が特徴的な「金魚ちょうちん」だ。150年前ころから作られはじめたが、電気の普及と製作の手間から一時は衰退した。そこで、今は亡き河村信男さんが、誰でも作ることができるようにデザインを改良。すると、金魚ちょうちんが復活し、今では高齢者から子どもまで幅広い世代から、町のシンボルとして愛されている。次の世代へとたしかに引き継がれている伝統、金魚ちょうちんを紹介すする。

Yanai City is an old sea trading port in Yamaguchi, in western Japan. It had been famous for the unique goldfish-shaped lanterns that were used to light the town from about 150 years ago until the advent of electric lighting. As its peculiar design was a bit hard for the people to hand down to the younger generation, the lanterns almost died out when the late Nobuo Kawamura made it his mission to revive them. He created a new design, simple enough to be shaped by young and old alike. The goldfish lanterns are now so popular again as the symbol of the town. The tradition of Yanai has thus revived.
