　長い歴史の中で育まれてきた文化財は、大事に保管されていたため、人目に触れる機会も限られ、科学的な分析や基本データが残されないまま劣化や損傷が進んでいた。元の姿により忠実に修復するためには、現在の姿を記録しておく必要がある。そのために開発されたのが、電子工学専門の京都大学・井手亜里名誉教授による世界初の超高精細スキャナー。プロ用カメラの画像の900倍の画素数を持つ精度の高い画像で記録する。重さも、従来の500キロに比べ100キロ程度、分解して持ち運ぶことができる井手教授の開発したスキャナーは、文化財だけでなく、古地図などのデータをスキャンして防災対策に活かされている。世界初の超高精細の技術を紹介する。

　Cultural properties, even how carefully preserved, will suffer damage and deterioration. Sometimes they are locked away from our view without being analyzed scientifically nor observed closely to collect their basic data. When data is not accurate enough, we cannot expect satisfactory restoration. Thus Professor Emeritus Ide of Kyoto University developed an ultra-high resolution scanner. It can scan 900 times finer than high-end professional cameras, which enables us to record extremely accurate images. In addition to the reduced weight from 500 to 100kg, its modular construction contributed to easy carrying around. Now, the new scanner have found other new applications – for example, disaster experts are now using it to scan data from old maps in order to mitigate future damage.
