　山形県・最上川流域地方では、16世紀から栽培が始まり、日本最大の生産地となっている。この紅花から生み出される紅餅は、高級な織物や口紅の染料として利用され、玉虫色に輝く口紅は数百年に渡り、日本人に愛好されてきた。

　日本伝統の製法で受け継がれている紅色の魅力を紹介する。

 The color red has deep cultural significance for the Japanese.

 For example, children wear red at shrine rituals to ward off evil spirits, and brides paint their lips crimson to protect against misfortune.

 Of all red dyes, so-called “beni” made from safflowers is considered the most precious.

 The Mogami River area in Yamagata Prefecture has grown safflowers since the 16th century and is now Japan’s largest producer of “beni”. Petals of safflowers are picked one by one by human hand and treated into flat ovals called beni-mochi which will be diluted by water when dyeing high-quality kimonos.

 There’s also traditional “beni” rouge which has been loved by fashionable Japanese ladies for centuries. It has been a mystery since ever that “beni” rouge looks not red but shimmering green when kept in the vessel.
